Classroom Conversations About Healthy Relationships

You don't need a dedicated assembly to teach prevention. Short, regular conversations in any classroom — health, English, social studies — build a culture where students think critically about relationships, boundaries, and respect. This playbook gives teachers discussion frameworks they can use in 10-15 minutes, adapted to any subject.

Steps

  1. Start with ground rules: no personal disclosures required, respect all perspectives, no victim-blaming language.
  2. Use media analysis — examine a song lyric, movie scene, or social media trend for relationship dynamics.
  3. Ask open-ended questions: 'What does a healthy relationship look like to you?'
  4. Use scenarios from the Scenario Simulator as discussion prompts — let students debate what they'd do.
  5. Connect to your subject: in English, analyze how characters treat each other; in health, discuss consent.
  6. Normalize disagreement — students will have different views. Facilitate, don't correct.
  7. End with one action step: 'What's one thing you can do this week to build healthier relationships?'
  8. Follow up in the next class — ask if anyone thought about it or did anything differently.
