Building a School-Wide Prevention Culture

For Administrator / Educator

Prevention doesn't work as a one-off assembly. It works when it's embedded in the school's culture — in classrooms, athletics, policies, and the way adults respond to incidents. This playbook helps educators and administrators build a coordinated, multi-tier prevention strategy that reaches every student, not just the ones who show up to the assembly.

Steps

  1. Form a prevention coalition: include admin, counselors, coaches, teachers, student leaders, and parent representatives.
  2. Audit what prevention is already happening — assemblies, health class, athletics, clubs — and identify gaps.
  3. Map prevention across the school year so every student gets multiple touchpoints, not a single annual event.
  4. Train all staff on recognizing warning signs and responding to disclosures — not just the counselor.
  5. Integrate prevention language into everyday school culture rather than isolating it to special events.
  6. Create a clear, public reporting process that students and parents can easily access.
  7. Measure annually: student climate surveys, incident tracking, and program effectiveness reviews.
  8. Share results with the school board and community — transparency builds trust.
