Warning Signs: What to Watch For
Teen behavior is naturally erratic — mood swings, changing friend groups, and privacy needs are normal. But certain patterns signal something deeper: controlling relationships, harassment, or abuse. This guide helps parents distinguish normal teenage behavior from warning signs that need intervention. The key insight: you're not looking for one red flag, you're looking for a pattern of behavior change.
Steps
- Sudden isolation from friends: your teen stops spending time with their usual friend group.
- Constant phone checking by partner: their partner demands to see their phone, tracks their location, or gets angry when they don't respond immediately.
- Changes in dress or behavior: suddenly dressing differently, dropping activities they loved, or avoiding places they used to go.
- Unexplained anxiety or depression: especially anxiety that seems tied to their relationship or a specific person's messages.
- Secrecy about relationship: they won't talk about their partner, change screens when you walk by, or become defensive when you ask basic questions.
- Physical signs: unexplained bruises, changes in eating or sleeping, or sudden weight loss or gain.
- When to act: if you see a pattern of 2-3 signs lasting more than two weeks, it's time to have a direct conversation or seek professional help.
