Party Culture: Host Responsibility and Bystander Tactics

Parties are the highest-risk environment in Greek life. This playbook gives chapters concrete, enforceable host responsibility protocols — not just 'be responsible' but specific practices that reduce risk. It also trains members on bystander tactics designed for party settings: how to spot someone being targeted, how to intervene without escalating, and how to handle the aftermath.

Steps

  1. Designate 2-3 sober monitors for every social event with clear responsibilities (not just 'watch the door').
  2. Create a buddy system for any member who notices someone being isolated or targeted — never intervene alone.
  3. Stock a 'care station' with water, snacks, phone chargers, and a quiet room where anyone can decompress.
  4. Establish a rule: no one leaves alone with someone they just met — buddies walk together or a sober monitor checks in.
  5. Brief the chapter before every event: review the signs of predatory behavior and the intervention plan.
  6. Create a post-event debrief process — what went well, what was concerning, any incidents to follow up on.
  7. Train members on the '3 Ds' of bystander intervention adapted for parties: Direct, Delegate, Distract.
