Accountability Systems: Moving Beyond 'We Handled It'

'We handled it internally' is not accountability — it's cover-up. This playbook helps chapters build transparent, fair, and consistent accountability systems that members trust. A system people trust is a system people use. A system people use is a system that changes behavior.

Steps

  1. Document your standards board process in writing — who serves, how members are selected, how conflicts are handled, what the appeal process is.
  2. Publish the process to all members so everyone knows how accountability works before they need it.
  3. Train standards board members on fair process, confidentiality, and trauma-informed review.
  4. Establish consistent sanctions for specific violations so outcomes don't depend on who you are.
  5. Create a tracking system (confidential) for incidents and outcomes — patterns matter more than single events.
  6. Share aggregate, de-identified data with the chapter once per semester.
  7. Invite your chapter advisor to review the process annually for fairness and effectiveness.
  8. Connect accountability to education — sanctions should include learning, not just punishment.
