Supporting a Friend Who Discloses

When someone discloses to you, your response matters enormously. This guide gives athletes and students a simple framework for responding with care, not interrogation.

Steps

  1. Listen without interrupting.
  2. Believe them: 'I believe you. Thank you for telling me.'
  3. Do not ask 'why' questions: 'What were you wearing?' is never helpful.
  4. Ask what they need: 'Do you want to talk to someone? I can go with you.'
  5. Respect their choices: it's their decision whether to report.
  6. Follow up: check in a few days later.
