Coaching Beyond the Field: Mentorship in Community Settings

Community coaches often have more influence than they realize. In community sports leagues, after-school programs, and mentorship settings, you may be the most consistent adult in a young person's life. This playbook helps community-based coaches and mentors extend prevention principles beyond the athletic field and into the mentorship relationship itself.

Steps

  1. Establish yourself as a trusted adult: be consistent, follow through, and show up.
  2. Use natural moments to teach: car rides, bench time, post-practice conversations are all opportunities.
  3. Model respect in everything: how you talk about women, how you handle conflict, how you treat officials.
  4. Create a code of conduct for your program that includes respect and bystander expectations.
  5. Watch for warning signs: sudden behavior changes, isolation, risky relationships — and know how to respond.
  6. Connect families to resources: you don't have to solve everything, but you need to know who can help.
  7. Build relationships with school counselors and local advocacy organizations before you need them.
  8. Document concerns and follow up — patterns matter.
