A safe space isn't a room — it's a culture. This playbook helps community program leaders build environments where young people feel physically and emotionally safe, where reporting is encouraged, and where the adults in the program are trained and accountable.

Steps

  1. Conduct a safety audit: physical space, supervision ratios, access control, communication with parents.
  2. Establish and post clear behavioral expectations for both youth and adults.
  3. Train all staff and volunteers on recognizing and reporting abuse — no exceptions.
  4. Implement a background check policy for all adults working with youth.
  5. Create a simple, accessible reporting process for youth and parents — and publicize it.
  6. Build a culture where speaking up is praised, not punished.
  7. Hold regular staff meetings to discuss concerns, patterns, and prevention strategies.
  8. Partner with local advocacy organizations for training and support.
